Calculator guide

Debt Snowball Calculator helps you explore the stated finance question. Start with the labelled inputs, then review the method, worked example and limitations before using a result.

Formula or method

Pay every fixed minimum first. Apply the remaining monthly budget to the debt with the smallest outstanding balance, then roll unused payments to the next debt. Compare with highest-APR-first Avalanche. Interest is APR/12, rounded monthly per debt to cents; final payments are capped.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter each debt’s Balance, APR (%) and Minimum monthly payment; use Add debt or Remove debt to match your accounts.
  2. Set Total monthly debt budget (including minimums) at or above the sum of minimums.
  3. Compare payoff time, interest, total paid and payoff order for both strategies.

Worked example

Debt 1: $100 at 0% with $10 minimum. Debt 2: $200 at 12% with $10 minimum. Total monthly budget $100. Snowball pays $305.01 over 4 months with $5.01 interest; Avalanche pays $303.35 over 4 months with $3.35 interest. Snowball clears Debt 1 first; Avalanche clears Debt 2 first.

Understanding the result

Compare the output with the debt snowball calculator worked example using exactly the same inputs. A different assumption or rounding convention can produce a different displayed result; the output does not establish personal or professional suitability.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Fixed minimums, fixed APRs, no new charges or fees, and end-of-month payments. The budget includes every minimum and stays constant. Actual daily interest and lender rules differ.
  • The worked example demonstrates the stated assumptions, not a recommendation about your personal circumstances.
