Calculator guide

Fractions helps you explore the stated math question. Start with the labelled inputs, then review the method, worked example and limitations before using a result.

Formula or method

For a/b and c/d: addition = (ad+bc)/(bd), subtraction = (ad−bc)/(bd), multiplication = ac/(bd), division = ad/(bc). Reduce by the greatest common divisor and normalize the denominator to positive. Integer arithmetic keeps the fraction exact.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter signed whole-number numerators and nonzero denominators, up to 30 digits per field.
  2. Choose the operation; division by a zero fraction is rejected. Read the exact fraction separately from the approximate decimal.

Worked example

The starting 1/2 + 1/4 gives exact fraction 3/4 and approximate decimal 0.75. For 1/2 ÷ 1/4, the result is 2. A zero denominator or division by a zero fraction is rejected.

Understanding the result

Compare the output with the fractions worked example using exactly the same inputs. A different assumption or rounding convention can produce a different displayed result; the output does not establish personal or professional suitability.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Each numerator and denominator must be a signed whole number of at most 30 digits. Blank, decimal and exponent inputs are unsupported, not rounded or replaced. Decimals are approximate; small nonzero results use scientific notation. Mixed-number input and symbolic algebra are not supported.
  • The worked example demonstrates the stated assumptions, not a recommendation about your personal circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

Which inputs should I check first?

Follow the Fractions input instructions above. Check each measurement, date, selection or expression before comparing results.

Why might my result differ from another tool?

Compare the other tool's fractions method, input units, rounding and assumptions. A matching title does not guarantee that both tools answer the same question.

Does a linked reference certify this result?

No. A reference can explain a formula or provide background for Fractions, but it does not endorse this website, validate personal inputs or establish professional suitability.
