Calculator guide
Convert everyday mass between kilograms, grams, milligrams, metric tons, avoirdupois pounds and ounces.
Formula or method
Output = input × source factor ÷ destination factor, using kilograms as the base. One avoirdupois pound = exactly 0.45359237 kg; one ounce = 1/16 pound = 0.028349523125 kg. A metric ton (tonne) = 1,000 kg.
How to use this calculator
- Choose source and destination units in From and To.
- Enter a finite, nonnegative Weight, including zero.
- Read Converted Weight and retain its unit label.
Worked example
Select lb → kg and enter 5: 5 × 0.45359237 = 2.26796185 kg, displayed as 2.267962 kg. Select lb → oz and enter 1: the result is exactly 16 oz.
Understanding the result
Everyday weight here means mass, not gravitational force. For US short tons or Imperial long tons, use the Weight & Mass Unit Converter linked below.
Limitations and assumptions
- Results show at most six fractional digits; tiny nonzero results use scientific notation. Invalid or out-of-range inputs are rejected.
- No short/long tons, troy/apothecary ounces, stone, fluid ounces or force units are offered.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams in a kilogram?
One kilogram equals 1,000 grams.
Which ton is offered?
Only the metric ton or tonne, exactly 1,000 kg. Use Weight & Mass Unit Converter to compare short and long tons.
Which ounce is offered?
The avoirdupois ounce, exactly one-sixteenth of an avoirdupois pound, not a troy ounce or fluid ounce.
