Calculator guide
Estimate flooring area, cutting waste, packages, and material cost for a rectangular room.
Formula or method
Room area = length × width; required area = room area × (1 + waste/100); packages = ceiling(required area ÷ package coverage).
How to use this calculator
- Enter room length and width in feet.
- Enter a cutting-waste percentage, package coverage, and price per package.
- Review required area, rounded packages, and material cost; add separate trim and underlayment.
Worked example
A 16×12 ft room is 192 sq ft. With 10% waste and 20 sq ft per package, required coverage is 211.2 sq ft and you need 11 packages.
Understanding the result
Waste covers cuts and damage; complex layouts, diagonal installation, and repeated patterns often need more than a simple rectangle.
Limitations and assumptions
- Models one rectangle and material only; it excludes thresholds, stairs, underlayment, adhesive, labor, and trim.
- Package coverage and waste are user inputs, so verify label coverage and the installation plan.
Frequently asked questions
Why round packages up?
Flooring is sold in whole packages, and a partial package cannot cover a complete installation.
How much waste should I enter?
A common planning range is 5–15%, but layout and product instructions should guide the choice.
Should I keep leftover flooring?
Yes, retain compatible spare material for future repairs when storage permits.
