Calculator guide
Fraction Calculator helps you explore the stated math question. Start with the labelled inputs, then review the method, worked example and limitations before using a result.
Formula or method
For a/b and c/d: addition = (ad+bc)/(bd), subtraction = (ad−bc)/(bd), multiplication = ac/(bd), division = ad/(bc). Reduce by the greatest common divisor and normalize the denominator to positive using exact integer arithmetic.
How to use this calculator
- Enter signed whole-number numerators and nonzero denominators, up to 30 digits per field.
- Choose the arithmetic operation and inspect the exact simplified fraction and approximate decimal.
Worked example
The starting 1/2 + 1/3 gives 5/6, with approximate decimal 0.83333333. Subtraction gives 1/6, multiplication gives 1/6, and division gives 3/2.
Understanding the result
Compare the output with the fraction calculator worked example using exactly the same inputs. A different assumption or rounding convention can produce a different displayed result; the output does not establish personal or professional suitability.
Limitations and assumptions
- Enter signed whole numbers, up to 30 digits per field. Blank, decimal and exponent inputs are unsupported. Denominators must not be zero; division by a zero fraction is rejected. The fraction is exact, while the decimal uses up to eight fractional digits or scientific notation.
- The worked example demonstrates the stated assumptions, not a recommendation about your personal circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
Which inputs should I check first?
Follow the Fraction Calculator input instructions above. Check each measurement, date, selection or expression before comparing results.
Why might my result differ from another tool?
Compare the other tool's fraction calculator method, input units, rounding and assumptions. A matching title does not guarantee that both tools answer the same question.
Does a linked reference certify this result?
No. A reference can explain a formula or provide background for Fraction Calculator, but it does not endorse this website, validate personal inputs or establish professional suitability.
