Calculator guide
Ideal Weight Calculator helps you explore the stated health question. Start with the labelled inputs, then review the method, worked example and limitations before using a result.
Formula or method
The displayed adult BMI-reference interval is 18.5×height in meters² through 24.9×height in meters². Devine estimate in kg = 50 for men or 45.5 for women, plus 2.3×max(0, height in inches−60); the tool converts that estimate to pounds.
How to use this calculator
- Enter height and the demographic inputs requested by the formula.
- Use the output to understand the formula, not to set a medical weight goal.
Worked example
Choose male and enter height 70 in. The BMI-reference interval displays approximately 58.5–78.7 kg; the Devine estimate is 73 kg, displayed as 160.9 lb. Neither is a measured personal target.
Understanding the result
Compare the output with the ideal weight calculator worked example using exactly the same inputs. A different assumption or rounding convention can produce a different displayed result; the output does not establish personal or professional suitability.
Limitations and assumptions
- Body composition, age, pregnancy, health conditions, and the equation’s original population affect interpretation. The tool clamps the Devine height increment below 60 inches to zero.
- The worked example demonstrates the stated assumptions, not a recommendation about your personal circumstances.
