Calculator guide

Convert nautical miles to kilometers, meters or international miles, alongside millimeters, centimeters, inches, feet and yards. For everyday distances without nautical miles, use the simpler Length Converter.

Formula or method

Output = input × source factor ÷ destination factor, using meters as the base. One international nautical mile is exactly 1,852 m; one international mile is exactly 1,609.344 m. They are not interchangeable.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the Value to convert. The interface starts with 1; replace it with your measurement or quantity. Blank, nonnumeric and out-of-range values cannot produce a result.
  2. Select From unit for the source unit. Match the complete label, including square/cubic units, decimal/binary prefixes or the gallon system when applicable.
  3. Select To unit for the destination unit, then read Converted value with its unit label.
  4. Try the worked example with its stated source and destination units. Results show at most eight fractional digits; very small nonzero values use scientific notation. Check the page limitations before interpreting the output.

Worked example

Select nautical mile (nmi) → kilometer (km) and enter 10: 10 × 1,852 ÷ 1,000 = 18.52 km. Select mile (mi) → kilometer (km) for 10 international miles: 16.09344 km.

Understanding the result

A nautical-mile distance and its kilometer result describe the same length. This does not calculate a route, travel time or speed; knots belong in the Speed Unit Converter.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Enter a finite, nonnegative distance, including zero. This tool converts magnitudes, not signed coordinates.
  • Feet, yards and miles use international definitions, not US survey units. No cables, fathoms or flight levels are offered.
  • Displayed values are rounded; very small nonzero results use scientific notation. Out-of-range results are rejected.

Frequently asked questions

Is a nautical mile the same as a mile?

No. A nautical mile is 1,852 m; the international land mile is 1,609.344 m.

Does this convert knots?

No. Knots measure speed (nautical miles per hour); use the Speed Unit Converter.

Which foot does this use?

The international foot, exactly 0.3048 m, not the retired US survey foot.
