Calculator guide
Convert everyday distances between meters, centimeters, millimeters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards and international miles.
Formula or method
Output = input × source factor ÷ destination factor, using meters as the base. One international inch = exactly 0.0254 m; one foot = 12 inches; one yard = 3 feet; one mile = 5,280 feet.
How to use this calculator
- Choose the source unit in From.
- Choose the destination unit in To.
- Enter a finite, nonnegative Length, including zero, and read Converted Length with its unit label.
Worked example
Select in → cm and enter 12: 12 × 0.0254 ÷ 0.01 = 30.48 cm.
Understanding the result
Conversions preserve the physical quantity but not the precision of the original measurement. For nautical miles, use the Length Unit Converter linked below.
Limitations and assumptions
- Results show at most six fractional digits; tiny nonzero results use scientific notation. Invalid input or numeric overflow/underflow is rejected.
- No nautical miles, signed coordinates, US survey feet, area or volume. Feet and miles use international definitions.
Frequently asked questions
Is inch-to-centimeter exact?
The international inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm.
Why do reverse conversions differ slightly?
Rounded display values can make a second conversion appear different.
Where can I convert nautical miles?
Use the Length Unit Converter, which also distinguishes nautical from international land miles.
