Calculator guide
Scientific Calculator helps you explore the stated math question. Start with the labelled inputs, then review the method, worked example and limitations before using a result.
Formula or method
Evaluate bounded mathematical expressions with normal operator precedence. Powers use ^ and associate right to left; unary minus applies after powers. The trigonometric functions sin, cos and tan always use radians. log is base 10 and ln is the natural logarithm.
How to use this calculator
- Enter an expression of at most 500 characters. Trigonometric inputs are radians; this tool has no angle-mode switch.
- Use ^ for powers and parentheses to make the intended order explicit, then select Calculate.
Worked example
sqrt(81) = 9; log(100) = 2; sin(pi/2) = 1. The expression -2^2 gives -4, while (-2)^2 gives 4. The power 2^3^2 gives 512.
Understanding the result
Compare the output with the scientific calculator worked example using exactly the same inputs. A different assumption or rounding convention can produce a different displayed result; the output does not establish personal or professional suitability.
Limitations and assumptions
- There is no degrees/radians switch on this tool. Enter at most 500 characters; results use up to 12 significant digits. Invalid syntax, out-of-range literals, division by zero and undefined real functions are rejected. No variable assignment, symbolic algebra or JavaScript execution is supported.
- The worked example demonstrates the stated assumptions, not a recommendation about your personal circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
Which inputs should I check first?
Follow the Scientific Calculator input instructions above. Check each measurement, date, selection or expression before comparing results.
Why might my result differ from another tool?
Compare the other tool's scientific calculator method, input units, rounding and assumptions. A matching title does not guarantee that both tools answer the same question.
Does a linked reference certify this result?
No. A reference can explain a formula or provide background for Scientific Calculator, but it does not endorse this website, validate personal inputs or establish professional suitability.
