Calculator guide
Convert an existing area between square metric units, square feet, square inches, square yards, acres and hectares. This is a unit converter, not a calculator for finding area from side lengths.
Formula or method
Output = input × source area factor ÷ destination area factor. Square the linear scale: 1 ft² = 144 in² = 0.09290304 m². One hectare is 10,000 m²; this tool uses the international-foot acre of 4,046.8564224 m².
How to use this calculator
- Enter the Value to convert. The interface starts with 1; replace it with your measurement or quantity. Blank, nonnumeric and out-of-range values cannot produce a result.
- Select From unit for the source unit. Match the complete label, including square/cubic units, decimal/binary prefixes or the gallon system when applicable.
- Select To unit for the destination unit, then read Converted value with its unit label.
- Try the worked example with its stated source and destination units. Results show at most eight fractional digits; very small nonzero values use scientific notation. Check the page limitations before interpreting the output.
Worked example
Select square foot (ft²) → square meter (m²), then enter 250. The calculation is 250 × 0.09290304 = 23.22576 m². Separately, 1 ft² → in² gives 144, not 12.
Understanding the result
Read the result as the same area in another unit. For example, the 250 ft² floor area remains unchanged when written as 23.22576 m². Squared unit labels matter.
Limitations and assumptions
- Use a nonnegative area. Dimensions and shape are not inputs; measure or calculate the area first.
- Acres use the international foot, not the retired US survey foot. This is not a boundary survey or a materials/waste estimator.
Frequently asked questions
Why is one square foot 144 square inches?
A foot is 12 inches, so a one-foot square has 12 × 12 = 144 square inches.
Can this find a room area?
No. Enter an already calculated area; the Square Footage Calculator accepts room dimensions.
Which acre is used?
The international-foot acre: 43,560 × 0.3048² = 4,046.8564224 m², not a US-survey-foot acre.
