Calculator guide
Calculate rectangular floor area, the same area in square yards, and the outside perimeter from length and width in feet.
Formula or method
Area (sq ft) = length (ft) × width (ft). Area (sq yd) = area (sq ft) ÷ 9. Perimeter (ft) = 2 × (length + width).
How to use this calculator
- Measure the rectangle's length and width in feet; convert any inches to fractions of a foot.
- Enter both dimensions in the calculator.
- Read area in square feet and square yards for surface coverage, or perimeter in feet for an outside edge.
Worked example
A 16 ft by 12 ft rectangle has 16 × 12 = 192 sq ft, or 192 ÷ 9 = about 21.33 sq yd. Its perimeter is 2 × (16 + 12) = 56 ft.
Understanding the result
Square footage measures a surface; perimeter measures the distance around it. They are not interchangeable when ordering materials.
Limitations and assumptions
- Models only one rectangle; divide L-shaped or irregular spaces into sections and add their areas separately.
- Does not subtract doors or openings, add cutting waste, or determine packages or material cost.
- The input fields are in feet, so entering inches as whole numbers would greatly overstate the result.
Frequently asked questions
How do I enter 6 inches?
Enter 0.5 ft; add it to any whole feet in that dimension.
Is square yardage the same as linear yards?
No. One square yard covers 9 square feet; a linear yard measures distance.
Can I use perimeter to buy flooring?
Use the area for flooring coverage; perimeter can help estimate edging or trim.
